How Heavy Should Your Adjustable Dumbbells Be?
Training notes · updated October 25, 2026
The right adjustable dumbbell is heavy enough for your strongest lift and light enough for your weakest. Here is how to size a set to your training today — and to the lifter you will be in a year.

FEIERDUN FDB Quick-Change 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells
FEIERDUN FDB quick-change adjustable dumbbells, 55 lb per hand: 10 settings (9–55 lb) or 5 settings (15–55 lb), dual-lock base.

Find your heaviest and lightest exercise
Lateral raises and triceps work often need 5–15 lb per hand. Rows, presses and goblet squats climb to 30–55 lb. Your set needs to cover both ends — that range matters more than the maximum on the box.
Beginners: 20 to 45 lb sets
If you are new to strength training, a DS2 30 or 45 lb set, or the DB3 hand weights for toning and Pilates, gives you room to learn the movements and add weight for months.
Intermediate: 50 to 55 lb per hand
Once your rows and presses pass 30 lb, look at the DB1 QuickDial (5–52.5 lb) or the FDB pair (up to 55 lb). The small increments help you keep progressing on shoulders and arms.
Are 20-pound dumbbells enough to build muscle?
For arms and shoulders, often yes — especially with higher reps. For legs, back and chest most people outgrow 20 lb within weeks, so a set that goes heavier is the better long-term buy.
Leave room to grow
Choose a set whose top weight is about 20–30% above what you lift today. That headroom keeps one set useful for a year or more.
